Sputum for Malignant Cells test helps in the diagnosis of lung cancer. Sputum is a thick fluid secreted by the cells of the lower respiratory tract, such as the trachea and bronchi. The sputum is observed for abnormal or cancerous cells under a microscope.

This test is done to diagnose a wide range of diseases:

  • Lung cancer
  • Tuberculosis
  • Asthma
  • Pneumonia

You will be asked to rinse your mouth and clean your nose to clear the airways for the procedure. Toothpaste should not be used to clean your teeth before the test. The sputum is collected by asking the individual to cough forcefully into a container.
