Sickling Test

A Sickling Test evaluates whether the red blood cells have changed shape (formed a sickle shape), becoming hard and sticky. The test diagnoses Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), which causes sickling of the RBC.

If the individual has symptoms like anemia, yellow and swollen eyes, swollen foot, vision problems, and obstructed growth, the sickling test is ordered by doctors.

The Sickling test (or sickle cell test) is done for the following reasons:

  • Diagnose Sickle Cell Disease
  • Diagnose Sickle Cell Anemia
  • Screen new-borns and infants for sickle cell trait

The procedure includes drawing blood from veins. No prior preparation is required.
