Phosphorus
Test
Phosphorus
The phosphorus test is a blood test that measures the amount of phosphate in your blood. Since the mineral phosphorus is present as phosphates, the test is better known as the phosphate test. Phosphates are electrically charged particles that bind together with mineral calcium to build strong bones and teeth.
A healthy kidney would filter and remove excess phosphate from the blood. Therefore, doctors recommend a phosphate test to evaluate abnormal phosphate levels in your blood. If phosphate levels are too high or too low, it might indicate underlying medical conditions such as:
- Kidney disease and bone disorders
- Parathyroid disorders. Parathyroid glands are located in the neck, producing hormones that
control calcium levels in the blood.
