Microfilaria Detection

The microfilaria detection test is performed on an individual to detect the presence of filarial worms in the blood. Microfilaria is a parasite that causes the disease filariasis. These filarial worms are causative agents of several diseases such as elephantiasis, river blindness, Loa Loa, etc.

There are three major types of filarial nematodes that are classified according to the body part they attack:

  • Lymphatic filariasis affects the lymphatic system.
  • Subcutaneous filariasis affects the subcutaneous layer of the skin.
  • Serous cavity filariasis affects the serous cavity of the abdomen.

Therefore, doctors recommend this test to check whether the person is suffering from filariasis and which part is affected.
