IgE-Total

Test

IgE-Total

This test measures the amount of IgE in the bloodstream of an individual. The body’s immune system releases immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies in response to a perceived threat such as viruses. IgE is one of five classes of immunoglobulins (A, G, M, D, and E) and is normally present in the blood in minute amounts.

IgE is also associated with mild allergic responses to chronic medical conditions like asthma and parasites and infections. Since the total IgE test measures the overall quantity of IgE, not the amount of a specific type, it can be used to detect an allergic response in the body, not a particular allergy.
