eGFR (Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate)
Test
eGFR (Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate)
An Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate Test is a blood test determining the functionality of your kidney. Glomeruli are filters on your kidney through which the blood passes, removing excess waste. The eGFR test measures the amount of blood that passes through these filters in a minute.
This test helps in diagnosing kidney diseases and the stage it is at. It monitors the kidney functions of a patient with chronic kidney disease, a person with diabetes, and a high blood pressure patient.
The eGFR test is important for people who have:
- Symptoms of Kidney Failures
- Diabetes
- High Blood Pressure
- Overweight
- Family History in Kidney failure
Levels of creatinine, a waste product, are measured in the blood and used to calculate the eGFR. To prepare for the test, you may need to fast before the test or stop the intake of certain medications.
