Bleeding Time and Clotting Time Test
The bleeding time test is done to determine the time taken by the blood clots to stop the bleeding. This test is prescribed to assess the functioning of your blood platelets to form clots.
The test is conducted by slashing two minor cuts on the lower arm. These are made deep enough to induce some bleeding. The healthcare provider smudges the cuts every 30 seconds, with paper, till the bleeding stops. Using a timer, they record the time it takes to stop the bleeding independently.
Knowing the time it takes to clot your blood helps the doctor evaluate if you have a bleeding disorder. The normal bleeding time stands nearly from 2 to 7 minutes. Similarly, the normal clotting time exists from 8 to 15 minutes. If this time exceeds in the patient, it might signify some underlying platelet defect.
