Bilirubin (Total + Direct)

Test

Bilirubin (Total + Direct)

A bilirubin test measures the levels of bilirubin compounds in an individual&’s bloodstream. A blood test can measure two forms of bilirubin: conjugated (direct) and unconjugated (indirect).

The major difference between both of them is that the direct bilirubin is water-soluble, while indirect bilirubin is insoluble in water.

Bilirubin (Total + Direct) Tests

Comparing the below three results, the doctor can identify health conditions such as liver damage, liver disease, jaundice (yellowing of the skin/eyes), pancreatic cancer, or gallbladder cancer.

Bilirubin Direct

"Direct" or "conjugated" bilirubin indicates that sugar has been attached to it.

Bilirubin Indirect

"Indirect" or "unconjugated" bilirubin indicates the absence of sugar.

Bilirubin Total

Altogether, the total amount of bilirubin in our body is called "total" bilirubin.
