Gram Stain Test

A Gram Stain Test is a test that checks for bacteria at the affected or infected area such as the throat, lungs, genitals, and other parts. The Gram Stain test checks for the presence of bacteria in body fluids like urine, blood, pleural fluid, etc., as well.

The color of the specimen after combining with the Gram Stain showcases the reaction of the bacteria. If the color of the bacteria turns purple – it is gram-positive. If the color turns pink or red, it is gram-negative. The negative and positive aspects help identify the infection or disease.

A gram stain test is recommended if you have symptoms like a bacterial infection, pain in a certain area, fever, and fatigue.

The following gram stain tests are performed based on the area/fluid being tested:

1.Gram Stain – Body Fluids   2.Gram Stain – CSF  3.Gram Stain – Ear Swabs    4. Gram Stain – Miscellaneous  5.Gram Stain – Nasal Swab  6. Gram Stain – Pus  7. Gram Stain – Sputum  8. Gram Stain – Throat Swabs  9.Gram Stain – Tissue  10. Gram Stain – Urine  11. Gram Stain – Vaginal Swabs  12. Gram stain-Ascitic Fluid  13. Gram stain-Bronchial Lavage  14.Gram stain-Others/Any Sample  15. Gram stain-Pericardial Fluid  16. Gram stain-Peritoneal Fluid  17. Gram stain-Pleural Fluid  18. Gram stain-Pleural Fluid

No prior preparations are required for these tests. The samples are obtained either on swabs, through veins (i.e., blood), urine, or a particular fluid location.
